Busting the BIGGEST Myths of Boudoir

Nothing is more frustrating than hearing myths and assumptions about your industry! Boudoir photography is shrouded in presumption and speculation by people who don’t quite understand the artwork that is boudoir. Among more conservative circles, this type of photography is still considered taboo.

But that’s why I’m here - time to dispel some myths. Tell me if you’ve heard about some of these before!

Myth #1: “Boudoir photography is a gateway into porn”

Nope! This is one I hear regularly from clients' family members, and it’s not remotely true. Boudoir isn’t a gateway drug into the porn industry. Actually, it’s about empowerment and seeing yourself in a new light you may not see otherwise. It’s not everyday you get to wear your favorite outfits and have your hair and makeup done professionally.

Boudoir is all about celebrating the skin you’re in, and that looks different for every woman who comes into my studio. Some feel comfortable with lingerie and others prefer to wear outfits that cover more. It’s based on each person’s comfort level!

Myth #2: “Those kind of photos are only for skinny women”

Again, nope! No matter your size, build, or shape, you are perfect for a boudoir photoshoot as you are--today! Throughout my career of photographing women, I’ve seen multiple body types come through my doors, and each of them are uniquely gorgeous.

After all, your shoot is about more than your body. Part of my job is to help you feel comfortable as I capture how your eyes glimmer, how your body moves, and celebrate each aspect that makes you the goddess you are. We become so desensitized to how stunning we are inside and out, and I love reigniting that self love in the heart’s of my clients.

Myth #3: “Boudoir Photography is just a fad”

Believe it or not, boudoir started decades ago! It came into the spotlight in the 1920s as this is the timeframe when nudity in photos was finally legal. In this decade, photographers wanted to focus on full-figured women with elaborate backdrops.

By the 1940s, pin-up girls in corsets took center stage in the boudoir world, and they even started using props. And in the 1970s, boudoir was accepted in the mainstream as a “professional artform.”

Myth #4: “You have to give your photos to your partner!”

While many of my clients choose to give their photos as a gift to their partner, it’s a gift to yourself first and foremost. Treating yourself like royalty for a day and seeing the results is a gift.

My studio is a safe place for each and every one of my clients. Your shoot is about you. Some clients come in to celebrate their current weight loss journey or to look back at their photos years from now and admire how they’ve grown both in body and mind. Having a partner to give photos to is not a requirement for your shoot.

Myth #5: “Boudoir Photography means you have to get naked”

No. Your comfort levels are the most important, and your shoot is all about what makes you feel sexy. If it’s revealing lingerie, a corset, or pajamas, your confidence will come out and shine in each of your photos.

Boudoir doesn’t mean I expect you to come to my studio and get naked. Instead, I want to see you come and feel absolutely beautiful. If you feel good, you look good!

I could go on with more myths about this industry, but I hope these helped clear space for you to consider your OWN shoot! Ready to take that leap? Let’s do it!
